Layering
Use “milk” or “tea” paint consistencies for translucent effects.
Allow each layer to dry before applying the next.
Builds depth while keeping the transparency of watercolor visible.
Highlighting (Negative Painting)
Leave intentional white space for highlights.
Paint around the white space to suggest shine and light reflection.
Creates natural-looking highlights without needing to add white paint.
Gradient Wash
Start with a strong, dark line of color.
Use water to soften the edge into a gradient.
Adds depth and makes surfaces look shiny or dimensional.
Variegated Washes
Paint one color on one side and another on the opposite side.
Introduce water in the middle to blend them softly.
Let colors mix organically while still keeping their individuality.

Assignment for Next Week:
Finish your beetle paintings or practice new beetle studies.
Bring your work to class next Wednesday.
Tape your paintings to the north wall so everyone can admire the progress and hard work.
