Week 1 of Beatles, Bee’s, and Brushstrokes

  1. Layering

    • Use “milk” or “tea” paint consistencies for translucent effects.

    • Allow each layer to dry before applying the next.

    • Builds depth while keeping the transparency of watercolor visible.

  2. Highlighting (Negative Painting)

    • Leave intentional white space for highlights.

    • Paint around the white space to suggest shine and light reflection.

    • Creates natural-looking highlights without needing to add white paint.

  3. Gradient Wash

    • Start with a strong, dark line of color.

    • Use water to soften the edge into a gradient.

    • Adds depth and makes surfaces look shiny or dimensional.

  4. Variegated Washes

    • Paint one color on one side and another on the opposite side.

    • Introduce water in the middle to blend them softly.

    • Let colors mix organically while still keeping their individuality.
